I wanted Whisperings to be a simple album of undeniably great songs, sung and recorded with guitar or acapella. Many of these are Irish and Scottish favourites and are important connections for us all across the Atlantic. The album title was inspired by the line "Whispering over the sea..." in the song Come back Paddy Reilly To Ballyjamesduff.
Here’s a few notes about each song on the album. The album was recorded and produced by Enda. Thanks for listening. All Along The Wild Atlantic Way … The song I cowrote with Aoife Scott that made it's way to the USA before me is somewhat of a calling card and I've enjoyed making my own version of it. Come Back Paddy Reilly To Ballyjamesduff Wonderful song who's melody and honesty drew me in. I've been listening to Paddy Reilly vinyl records (no relation) and that inspired the simple production of the album, to let the songs speak for themselves. The Lakes Of Pontchartrain I've been singing this for years and have lots of great feedback from folks on my Youtube videos of it so with it's American origins I felt it was time for it to be on a disc, Go Lassie Go This version is unique to this album for me as i wanted it to Whisper in it's own way using my lower register. Buachaill Ón Éirne One of those songs I learned in school and is wonderful. I taught some songs as gaeilge via zoom during lockdown and this was one of them. Danny Boy One of those songs I was hesitant to sing, but reeled me in and won me over. Hopefully I've brought some freshness to it for those who know it well. Máirseáil Saighdúra The Soldiers March is a tune I came up with to contrast with Johnnys confident optimism of going off to war with his woman's sadness at his leaving in siúil a rún. Siúil A Rún (Johnny Has Gone For A Soldier) I feel this song had two parrallel journeys, one in Ireland and one in the US and this version kinda reunites them for me. The Foggy Dew The Foggy Dew was requested many times at gigs and I gave it a go, but it took on a life of it's own for me once I brought the guitar for it into a different tuning called DADGAD. I go into a bit of a trance in this one. O My Luve's like a Red, Red Rose I had never heard the song version of this when I was younger and so I wrote my own melody to Robert Burn's classic poem. The drones are from Uileann pipes and Scottish smallpipes. Caledonia The most called-for song at my shows. I really enjoy playing this Dougie MacLean classic. Red Is The Rose This one got requested many times during my Live Streamsonline and it's since found it's way into my set. The Parting Glass Many of the songs on the album have a last song quality but this one won top spot for the last song.
